Last updated: November 2026 Published by Cydney Mar
The guidance on Idea to Income Roadmap comes from Cydney Mar's Concept-to-Reality Pathway and her 45+ years of product development experience, checked against published sources.
This page explains the criteria behind the roadmap order, the comparisons and the numbers on this site, so readers can judge the advice for themselves. Cydney Mar publishes this site and offers the services it describes.
How are the recommendations on this site formed?
Each recommendation is judged on five criteria, applied the same way on every page. Where a comparison appears, every option is described with the same kinds of facts, and none is called better on a point the facts do not show.
- OrderDoes this step belong before or after the others? Steps that prevent rework come first.
- Cost of a mistakeHow expensive is it to get this wrong, and can it be undone?
- Same facts for every optionOptions in any comparison are described with the same kinds of facts.
- Sourced numbers onlyMarket figures are quoted exactly as published, with a link and their conditions.
- No invented proofNo ratings, reviews, prices or outcomes appear unless Cydney Mar supplied them.

Limits of this guide
This is general product development guidance, not legal, financial or manufacturing certification advice. The worksheet on the costs and margins page gives estimates only. Results depend on the product, the market and the founder.
This page is part of the idea to income product roadmap guide, which shows how each stage fits together from first idea to first sale.
Common questions
- What is the main purpose of a roadmap?
- The main purpose of a roadmap is to show what happens next, in what order, and why, so you spend money on the right step at the right time. For a physical product, that means clarity before samples, vetted suppliers before production, and real margins before launch. Taking the right steps in the wrong order is where founders lose time and money.
- What is the Concept-to-Reality Pathway?
- The Concept-to-Reality Pathway is Cydney Mar’s six-stage method for taking a consumer product from idea to market: Product Clarity, Right Prototypes, The Right Suppliers, Cost and Margins, Production-Ready, and Launch and Scale. Each stage is designed so the work moves you closer to production instead of creating costly rework.
- Should I hire a product development consultant or do it myself?
- Doing it yourself costs less upfront and works if you have time to learn sourcing, costing and specifications. A consultant costs more but can shorten the learning curve and reduce rework. A middle path is to start with a free workbook, then bring in an expert at the stage where you feel least sure, such as samples or margins.
- Are free business counseling services an alternative?
- Yes, for general business planning. The U.S. Small Business Administration lists free business counseling as a resource for planning a business, and many regions offer similar programs. General counseling is broad, while specialist product development help focuses on samples, tech packs, suppliers, costing and production, which general counseling may not cover in depth.
- What are the four types of product strategies?
- The four product strategies most often taught come from the Ansoff Matrix: market penetration (existing product, existing market), market development (existing product, new market), product development (new product, existing market) and diversification (new product, new market). Most founders using an idea to income roadmap are doing product development or diversification, because the product itself is new.
